Budding poker players need to devise a strategy for them based on their personal style of play. It is also critical to understand what constitutes a winning online poker strategy.

Beginner poker players must develop an understanding of pot odds, table positions and interaction between opponents.

There are many different poker games, but aside from some play differences, some strategies remain the same.

In order to be a good online poker player, it is essential one knows how, when and how much to raise. This is widely regarded as one of the most key skills in successful online poker players.

So here we look at four ideal situations when players should go for that big raise to derive the maximum benefit from that particular hand.

1) As soon as you realize that your hole cards form a good hand, make a big raise. This will help intimidate weak players and narrow the field. It will also raise the stakes of that particular hand.

2) When you have made a hand, without the need to draw any more cards to win, apply pressure on the table by making a big raise. This will force players who were looking to draw another card to fold. Also, it will make sure only a player with a serious possibility of making a hand will stay in the play.

3) Raise can be a good strategy to bluff or semi-bluff. At time when you don’t have decent cards, this ploy can help you outmaneuver opponents. You need to realize that this is a big risk and one that could pay off. However, even if your opponents call the bluff, you may be able to improve on the draw.

4) Another advantage of making a good raise is that one can gain information about your opponents. When you raise, the next player has three options - raise, call, or fold. Based on his/her action, you can get a good idea of what they could possibly be holding. You can also receive a check from your opponent during the next betting round, thereby helping you to improve your hand with a free card.
